Three Common SEO Mistakes
I love it when I see a site that is ranking well for a keyword that I'm going for and they are making some simple SEO mistakes. That is a big signal to me that a high ranking is going to be achievable without a whole lot of work. If I'm helping someone out with their site and they are making these same mistakes, it also brings a smile to my face because I know that I'll be able to help them quickly and look like a genius in the process. What are some of these common mistakes that are easy to fix?
Linking to the Home Page
It's become pretty standard practice for everyone to link to their home page with "Home." However, why not use that link that appears on nearly every page of your site to pass some keyword juice? I will use a javascript link for the main user menu with the text "Home", that way it stays user-friendly. Then in the footer menu I will link to the home page with a do-follow link using the main keyword the site should rank for.
Duplicate Meta-Tags
The content on every page of your site should be different, so why would you use the same meta-tags? The description is the main thing to look for here, make sure it's different on every page and adequately describes the page.
Similar to the home page linking problem in that you are robbing the page you are linking to of any anchor text juice. If you must use something like "Click here for more information about our dog toys!" then make sure "dog toys" are the two words that you use to link to the dog toys page.
