Website Content Ideas

One of the old adages for Internet marketing is "Content is King."  I wrote about how SEO authority uses the number of pages your site has as one aspect of measuring the importance of your site.  Plus, the more pages that you have the more page rank that you have to work with for your on-site SEO efforts.  The key to all of this though is to make sure that you have quality content that is good for your visitors and good enough that other site owners will want to link to it.

Where do you find ideas for this kind of content?  It's not rocket science and it isn't going to be a whole lot of work for you to start cranking it out.  Here are some of the resources that I use when I run out of ideas.

Yahoo Answers

Do searchers have a specific question in your niche that they are looking for an answer to?  Write a post giving them what they want!  Not only is this highly relevant, but you have done a service to your visitor which builds trust.

Forums

Do a search in google for "(your keywords) forum" and see what kind of posts are being created.  What's even better about forums is that you can post a short answer on their site and link back to a detailed explanation on yours.  This not only gets you visitors and site content, but also a link back to your site.

Blogs

Do a blogsearch on Google using your keywords.  Take a look at other top blogs, what blogs they link to in their blogrolls and start seeing what others in your niche are covering.  Maybe you have a different take on the subject or maybe you have something more to add.  Either way, put these blogs into an RSS Reader so you can keep tabs on your competition and what they are up to.

Article Directories

There are a lot, but the top ones to look at are Ezine Articles, Go Articles, Hub Pages, and Squidoo.  Same kind of deal as with other blogs where you want to make sure you are adding to the conversation and not just regurgitating what's already been said.

News

Post current events relating to your topics.  This makes a lot more sense for certain types of sites over others, but is a fast and easy way to generate a lot of pages quickly.

Authority & SEO

If you are going to be successful in showing up in the search engine result pages (SERPs) for the keywords that you are targeting you must do three things.  You have to build up the authority of your site, you have to get anchor texts for the keywords you want to rank for to the pages that you want to show up, and you have to develop enough content on your site in order to be able to use internal linking strategies.

With this article we are going to be talking about authority.  What it is and how we can get more of it.  Now the search engines do not come right out and tell you exactly what they look for in an authoritative site, but we have done enough testing to get a general idea of the major factors and it boils down to three: age, links and size of the website.

Age

When you are looking for an expert's advice, wouldn't you consider how long that person has been in the field?  The same goes with giving authority to sites.  Why wouldn't a search engine trust a site about dog training that has been around for ten years, publishing content about dog training, over a site that just popped up yesterday?  If you were looking for a veterinarian for your dog, wouldn't you feel more comfortable taking your dog to a vet who has been in business for 10+ years rather than a young kid just graduating from school?

Incoming Links

If a site knows what they are talking about then other sites are going to use them for a reference and thus, give the site a vote of confidence by including a link from their site.  It makes sense that if a site has a lot of links coming in to their site it would indicate that the content is authoritative for the field.

The kind of links coming into a site matter too.  If you were moving to a new location and were going to have to transfer your dog's care to another vet, would you trust the recommendation of your current vet over the person bagging your groceries?  Same goes with websites.  If you have a dog training site and a dog supply store sends a link to your site, that should be more telling than if a site that recommends web hosting.

The number of backlinks matter, but I think the number of domains linking in has a bigger effect.  Do quality reviews from 20 different people convince you of something more than one annoying friend who tells you how "awesome" something is over and over again?  It should.

Size of the Website

Your authority increases with the amount of content on your site.  The more you know about a topic, the more of it you should cover.  Wikipedia and IMDB are two sites with tons of authority because they have such large sites.  Both of these sites offer a lot of quality information on the topics they cover and they are rewarded for it by the search engines.  If you want to increase the authority of your website, add more pages.

Google Analytics Training

In my previous post I talked about why you should use analytics on your site and why I think Google is the best solution out there.  Now that you know Google is the cream of the crop, how are you going to go about learning all of the cool features Google has for you to take advantage of?  My recommendation is to go through their Google Analytics training classes.

The first things that you will learn are:

  • Introduction: What Google Analytics can do for your business, how it works, how often the data is updated, and how to set your data sharing preferences.
  • Interface Navigation: How to set your date ranges, how to graph by time units, how to compare multiple metrics, how to export, how to email others your reports, how to navigate, how to use report views, how to segment and sort data
  • Installing the Code: Where to place the tracking code and how to verify installation.

After getting these basics down then you will learn how to interpret reports and analyze data, how pageviews and visitors are calculated, how Google tracks the time users spend on your site, the different kinds of traffic sources and how to identify which ones are the highest quality, how to interpret top content and landing pages, navigation summary, and entrance/exit paths.

After going through those tutorials (about 40 minutes worth of material) you can study the fundamentals (about 90 minutes) and then go into in-depth analysis (34 minutes).  All-in-all you should be ready to be an expert in Google Analytics after watching around 2 hours and 45 minutes of video.  Google even has a test that you can take to make sure that you absorbed the knowledge.  If you missed anything then it will tell you what areas you may need to go back and refresh your memory on.

Why Use Google Analytics

If you are a site owner then you should have some form of analytics installed on your site. This will allow you to track your user's data and make informed decisions about how to operate your site. Let's take a look at a few reasons that I use analytics with my Internet business:

Spotting Problems - Setting up analytics will allow you to easily spot bugs, mistakes, and oversights. The sooner you spot them, the quicker they are fixed and you are back on track.

Managing Campaigns - If you are using any sort of pay-per-click (PPC) then analytics is an absolute must, but beyond PPC you also need to monitor organic search for the results you are getting from certain keywords, or any other kind advertising that you are doing.

Spotting Opportunities - If you see trends in your analytics, like an increase in the number of people finding your site by a certain keyword, then you can start to ramp up your link building efforts for that specific anchor text.

Improving Conversions & Testing - What pages are most of your visitors finding first?  What are they doing after they land on your site?  Is there anything that you can do to drive them to your money pages or get them to sign up for your newsletter?  How are you going to know the answers to any of these questions if you aren't tracking visitors?

Hopefully by now you understand just how important it is to have some sort of analytics program on your site, but which one to choose.  There are several good providers out there, but Google Analytics is my preferred solution.  Here is why:

  • Easy integration with Adsense and Adwords:  This allows me to track my earnings from Adsense, and also allows me to search which keywords are profitable in my PPC campaigns.
  • E-Commerce Integration: I can track my sales back to specific pages, keywords, etc...
  • User-Defined Goals: What pages do I want my users to end up at?  Easily customizable.
  • Reports: Dashboard is configurable and gives me a quick overview of the information I want to see, plus I can export the data in a variety of different methods.
  • Users: I can assign different people on my team access to different site profiles.
  • Up-Time: Google is tough to overload, so you know there is going to be near 100% uptime.
  • Custom Reports: Secondary segmentation and drill-down of the data.
  • Mobile Analytics: Tracking the phones and operating systems used.
  • Site Search:  So I can see just what my users are looking for.
  • Event Tracking: Allows me to track clicks on outbound links.

The only real down side to Google Analytics is that the data is not in real-time.  It's delayed by a few hours, but I look mostly at long-term reports so this isn't that big of a deal to me.  It is easy to install, so I recommend getting signed up today and start using this great service so you can track your visitors and use the data to improve your site performance.

Exit Pop Up Code

Did you know that 98% of people visit a website and then leave without taking any action at all?  They don't place an order, they don't sign up for your RSS feed, nor do they sign up for your newsletter.

I know there isn't a lot of love for pop ups anymore, but you have probably lost these visitors anyway so why not take a chance to give them another opportunity to take action.  Most have already decided to leave your site anyway!  You can use the exit pop up code to do any of the following:

  • Give the visitor a special offer (a discount to the product or a free trial)
  • Remind them of the free giveaway you are offering to all subscribers to your list (you are building your list with incentives right?!)
  • Show them related products
  • And much more!

With the Exit Catcher Pro an unblockable exit pop up is triggered when your visitors click on the back button or when they try to close their browser.  This gives the user a second chance to see your offer that is right in front of their eyes.  Turn lost visitors into paying customers or subscribers the easy way!

Exit Catcher Pro is very easy to use and customize.  You just enter the message you want the visitor to see, what target page you want them sent to, and what piece of audio you want to play.  There are 10 audio files already loaded into the software for you to choose from.

I will be using this unblockable exit pop code to give my visitors discounts, downsell products, offer incentives for joining my list, showing related affiliate offers, and more.

This script can recapture 20% or more of your exiting traffic, so think about how much more money your site can make by using this exit pop up code!

Keyword Research 101

If you are going to employ any kind of search engine optimization (SEO) into your marketing efforts then it is important to know what keywords your market is searching for. Keywords are nothing more than the terms that a user puts into the search engine to find what they are looking for.  Don't know the best way to do keyword research?  Don't worry as our Keyword Research 101 will bring you up to speed.

The search engine results pages (SERPs) are simply the best ways to get long-term targeted traffic to the landing pages you use to promote your affiliate products. These users are very targeted, they are looking for exactly what you are trying to offer them!

What are the keywords that you should be targeting? Well here are the three things that I look for in a good keyword that I'll detail out in a little Keyword Research 101:

Volume

This is obviously the most important. If you are sitting on the first page for a keyword that nobody is using then you won't get any traffic and thus, no sales. The more people that are searching for a keyword, the more traffic you will get to your site if you are high up in the results.

Specific and Targeted

If you are promoting an ebook that gets rid of acne then ranking for "how to get rid of acne" is a lot better than just "acne." If someone is looking to get rid of acne, then most likely they have a problem and they want to "get rid of it." They are ready to act, which means buy from you. When choosing a keyword think about the attitude of the searcher. Are they going to be in a buying state of mind?

Competition

It would be great to rank no. 1 for "auto insurance" but if you take a look results there are 21,500,000 competiting pages. With 13,600,000 searches each month for that term alone, it's no wonder there are so many people trying to get a piece of the pie. If you want to get to the top of these results then you are going to be in for one heck of a fight. Instead, I would focus on a less competitive term.

How to Find Keywords

The first step to finding keywords is to come up with a few terms on your own. Let's start with three in the online dating world. Off the top of my head I would go with "attract women", "approach women, and "meet women". Think broad right away. You won't be trying to take over these keywords right away, but will use them to build a more complete list.

Next go to Google's Keyword Tool and type in the phrases that you came up with. Google will give you more keyword ideas. Things like "how to get a girlfriend" and "how to approach women in a bar". More specific and more targeted. That is what we are going after here. Put all of this information in an excel spreadsheet that lists the term, search count, and competing pages. You want to compete with as few as pages as possible, so try to find less than 30,000 competing pages at first. The search count should be over 100 so you aren't wasting your time building pages based off of terms people aren't really searching for.

After going through this process you should have a pretty good keyword list built up.
